Construction projects in India to watch out for in 2023

  1. The Narmada Valley Development Project

With an estimated cost of around 30 billion US dollars, this is an ambitious water resources development project in the Narmada River Valley in India. The project involves the construction of a series of dams and canals along the river basin to generate electricity and provide irrigation and drinking water. Sardar Sarovar Dam is also a part of this project with an aim to create a 1,450 MW hydroelectric project dam.

  1. Chenab River Railway Bridge

It’s the highest railway bridge in the world, standing at a staggering  1,178 feet above the Chenab River. With a budget of 92 million US dollars, the 1.3km long project will connect Kashmir valley to the rest of India. The unique design of the bridge is an impressive feat.

  1. Bharatmala Project

It is a highway construction project launched by the Government of India in 2017. The project aims to improve connectivity in the country by constructing or upgrading approximately 34,800km of national highways and border roads.

With an estimated budget of 130 billion US dollars, it will cover the construction of national highways, bridges, flyovers, bypasses, ring roads, elevated corridors, tunnels, and overpasses across the country.

  1. Mumbai Trans Harbour Link

This project aims to connect the Mumbai-Pune Expressway on the eastern side and the coastal road. The bridge will start at Sewri in South Mumbai and terminates at Chirle in Nhava Sheva, all the while crossing Thane Creek north of Elephanta Island. With a budget of 2.2 billion US dollars, this project which is 21.8km long, will have 6 lanes with a holding capacity of 70,000-80,000 vehicles annually.

  1. Inland Waterways Development Project

As a part of the strategic infrastructure at the cost of 600 million US dollars of investment and technical assistance from the world bank, aims to construct 111 national waterways in India. This will enable easier movement of ships and cargo.

One of the national waterways (NW-1), on the Ganga river and passes through Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal.

This development can play a vital role in realizing the vision of Prime Minister to make India zero carbon emissions by 2070.
